High potential and gifted education

Some students learn faster and more easily than others. These students may shine in creativity, thinking, leadership or sport.

At our school, we recognise and nurture these strengths early. We support advanced learners with great lessons and activities to help them grow and thrive.

Why choose us for your high potential or gifted child?

Recognising potential and developing talent

Our teachers find potential and nurture our students to be the best they can be.

Tailored lessons

Each student has different abilities. Teachers respond to each student’s ability by providing extra challenges and extension activities to keep learning exciting and engaging.

Rich opportunities and activities

Students can take part in opportunities to develop their talent in the arts, sport, leadership and more.

Opening doors to wider experiences

Our students can participate in a wide range of state-wide opportunities that aim to extend and enrich student potential.

What is high potential and gifted education?

High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.

We do this through:

Our high potential and gifted education opportunities

Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.

In our classroom

Our High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) program is designed to nurture and challenge identified students, helping them reach their full academic potential.

  • Mathematics Acceleration: Identified students participate in mathematics sessions in the higher year groups to encourage the acceleration of advanced problem-solving skills. This approach provides them with stimulating challenges beyond their current grade level.
  • Differentiated Reading: Our HPGE students engage in differentiated reading programs tailored to their individual abilities. This ensures they are not only reading at their level but also extending their comprehension and critical thinking skills, fostering a deeper understanding of texts.
  • Tailored Learning Experiences: Beyond maths and reading, our HPGE program offers targeted support and enrichment activities across various subjects, promoting creativity, critical thinking, and independent learning.

Through these tailored approaches, we aim to create an engaging and supportive environment that promotes academic growth and nurtures the unique strengths of each gifted learner.

Across our school

At our school, the High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) program offers a variety of enriching opportunities that cater to the diverse strengths and interests of our gifted students.

  • Lego League Competition: Identified HPGE students are encouraged to participate in the Lego League competition, where they develop skills in teamwork, engineering, coding, and problem-solving while engaging in a collaborative and challenging environment.
  • Creative and Performing Arts: Creative expression is a key focus of our HPGE program. Students have opportunities to showcase their talents through participation in film and dance competitions, allowing them to explore and excel in the performing arts.
  • Broad Enrichment Opportunities: Beyond competitions, the program supports students in developing critical thinking, leadership, and communication skills through various school-wide initiatives and extracurricular activities tailored for gifted learners.
  • Holistic Development: We foster a balanced approach that nurtures both academic excellence and social-emotional wellbeing, ensuring students can thrive as confident, creative, and motivated individuals.
  • Leadership Opportunities: We encourage our students to take on leadership roles such as School Captain and become a member of the Student Representative Council (SRC). These positions help them build confidence, teamwork, and communication skills, while allowing them to contribute to decision-making and represent their peers within the school community.

Our commitment is to provide meaningful and varied opportunities across the school to inspire and challenge our HPGE students, helping them to grow their talents and passions in a supportive community.

Across our Community

Our school is proud to be part of the Orara Valley Learning Community (OVLC), a collaborative network dedicated to enriching the educational experiences of all students. Through this partnership, we actively support the NSW Department of Education’s High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) initiative, fostering the growth and development of gifted learners across our region.

  • Inter-School Opportunities We are dedicated to supporting the development of highly potential and gifted students through a comprehensive approach aligned with the seven domains of the Highly Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) framework: Curriculum and Learning, Identification and Assessment, Teaching Practice, Social and Emotional Wellbeing, Leadership and Management, Partnerships and Community Engagement, and Professional Learning and Capacity Building.

Throughout the year, a range of targeted events are hosted to provide enriching opportunities that foster intellectual growth, creativity, leadership, and social-emotional development. These initiatives empower select students to engage deeply with their learning, build essential skills, and realise their full potential within a collaborative and supportive community.

Our involvement in the Orara Valley Learning Community reflects our commitment to building a strong, supportive educational network where students with high potential are nurtured and challenged through shared resources, expertise, and collaboration across our schools.
